Empowering Women and Girls : Insights Shared at the World Summit on Women & Girls

428views

The World Summit on Women & Girls took place at the Houses of Parliament and other venues in London on 6-7 November, marking the UN International Day of the Girl.

Meanwhile in the program, Feed the Minds’ Communications Manager, Dr. Sangita Shrestha, had the honour of speaking at the Summit in Parliament. As a panellist and speaker, Shrestha shared valuable insights into the organisation’s vital work in empowering women and girls globally through education and literacy.

“There are 773 million illiterate adults worldwide, and the majority of them are women. We must not forget the marginalised populations who are at risk of being left even further behind due to a lack of education and literacy”, she said.

She further highlighted the importance of functional literacy, stating: “Our work in reducing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Nigeria through awareness and literacy programmes, as well as our classes for women cotton pickers in Pakistan, are examples of the transformative impact of functional literacy in everyday life.”

The panel discussion, themed “How We Can Support Girls’ Vision for the Future,” sparked inspiring and engaging conversations with advocates and leaders from around the world, all united by a shared commitment to gender equality.

“We’re pleased that Feed the Minds has been able to join in with this dialogue, a valuable opportunity to amplify the voices of women and girls,” Lucy Moore, Interim CEO of Feed the Minds remarked.

The World Summit on Women & Girls was an initiative of the Justina Mutale Foundation and Hands Across Philadelphia, USA. The 2024 Summit was held in partnership with the Universal Peace Federation, UK.

Feed the Minds, an international development organisation, continues to drive change through education, literacy, and advocacy, making strides towards a more equal and just future for women and girls worldwide.
